As winter continues along its blustery course, I find myself remembering bits and pieces of nostalgia from my childhood in Minnesota. For those that don’t know, Minnesota is a state in the Upper Midwest of the United States. Just south of Canada, our winters are long, cold, and dark. The kind of winter where lakes become giant skating rinks and forests become silent mazes of glittering snow.
During those dark Minnesota winters, I remember my mother almost constantly baking. Pies (both fruit and meat), cakes, breads, not to mention the endless parade of cookies. It’s a miracle I didn’t have more cavities than I did! It got to the point, that when it came to remodel our kitchen, my mother insisted on having a second oven installed. At the time I thought nothing of it, though in hindsight I should have seen the signs of my mother’s burgeoning addiction.
